Your pre-op diet is mostly made up of protein shakes and other high-protein, easy-to-digest foods. Protein is needed to protect muscle tissue. Because of this, when you lose weight, you will lose fat, not muscle. You need to switch to a mostly liquid or all-liquid diet about 2 days before the surgery. But your doctor will decide what to do in the end. Please don’t eat any of the things on their lists. Also, be sure to ask your anesthesiologist what you can and can’t eat or drink before the surgery. Here’s an example of a diet after weightloss surgery you could do 2–3 days a week. You can talk to your doctor about other ways to eat.
Whether you follow a 1- to 2-week pre-op diet (for people with a BMI between 33 and 45 who are having surgery) or give this diet more time, you can eat and drink these things:
- Protein shakes
- Sugar-free drinks
- Caffeine-free drinks
- Soup stock
- Vegetable juice
If your doctor says it’s okay, you can eat one to two servings of lean meat or vegetables every day.
Workout And Meal Plan After Weightloss Surgery
Don’t think that your journey to lose weight starts after the surgery. It starts the moment you decide to have the surgery. As the well-known saying goes, “fake it until you make it.” You should start making the changes you’ll need to make after surgery before your surgery day. You don’t have to become an expert so quickly. Even a daily 10-minute walk is better than doing nothing. Picture yourself at the right weight for your height. This is the best reason to keep moving before the surgery and for a long time afterward as well.
Post-Operative Weight Loss Diet
A post-surgery diet has 4 steps that help your body heal and help you lose weight faster in the long run. We’ll talk about each of them in the sections that follow. But before we look at each phase in more detail, let’s talk about what we mean when we say ounce, cup, teaspoon, and other measurement terms.
This stage begins right after your surgery, during your stay in the hospital, and after you leave. Its length is usually different for people who have had gastric bypass surgery, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass with duodenal switch, and lap bands: Gastric sleeve and gastric bypass patients ==> Weeks 1 and 2 Lap band patients ==> Week 1 Attention! Drink water. This is the most important rule of this time.
Diet Guidelines To Keep Well Hydrated
Keep drinking liquids. You need to drink between 48 and 64 ounces of fluid every day, which is about seven 8-ounce cups of drinks on average. Don’t drink fruit juices. Overall, fruit juices are great for bariatric patients, but you should avoid them at first because they might make you sick or give you diarrhea.
It wasn’t too hot or too cold. Since your stomach hasn’t fully healed yet, drinks that are too hot or too cold could hurt it. You might be able to drink hot or cold fluids after about 6 weeks. Don’t forget that your stomach is still getting better after bariatric surgery. It’s common at this point to feel sick or throw up. Please drink enough water.
After you see your surgeon, they will let you know if you are ready for the next step. So, how long this phase lasts will depend on what your doctor says. But for most bariatric patients, it takes about two weeks.
This phase is mostly for people who have had gastric bands put on. It usually begins at the end of the first week and lasts about a week.
2 Weeks After Weightloss Surgery
Remember that feeling sick and throwing up after getting a gastric band is normal because your body is still healing. Just keep drinking water, and you’ll feel better soon. After a thorough checkup, your surgeon will tell you to move on to the next step, which is making your food into a puree. Most patients should start this stage 3 weeks after surgery and stay on this diet for about 2 weeks.
After each meal, people who have had a gastric bypass should take their protein supplements. Because protein is so important after surgery, we’ve written a whole section about it. You’ll find out more about what it means later. Patients with a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band can take protein supplements the same way they did in the first stage.
Now that your stomach has mostly healed, you can eat soft, solid foods again. So, you can eat fish, vegetables that have been cooked, meat, chicken, and other soft foods. Men need about 60 grams of protein a day, while women only need about 50 grams. You can start your meal with a high-protein food and then eat the rest of your meal. If you get full, your body will have gotten the protein it needs. Don’t forget to take your chewable vitamins every day and drink a lot of water and other fluids.
